Akşam yemeğini onlarla yemem için beni bekliyorlardı. ► Simple Past or Past Continuous Fark 3 Süreklilik bildiren tense'lerle kullanılmayan fiiller non-progressive verbs, Past Continuous Tense ile de kullanılmaz. Ama bu tür cümleleri Türkçe'ye çevirdiğimiz zaman Past Continuous Tense ile yapılan cümlelerle aynı yapı çıkar. Bu yüzden karıştırılması muhtemeldir. - I already knew the news about him. Ben onunla ilgili haberi zaten biliyordum. - She thought that I would go to the party as well. Partiye benim de gideceğimi zannediyordu. - The flowers looked nice yesterday, but now they are fading. Çiçekler dün güzel görünüyordu, ama şimdi soluyorlar. ► Simple Past or Past Continuous Fark 4 Geçmişteki alışkanlıklarımızı ya da sık sık yaptığımız eylemleri, Past Continuous Tense ile değil, Simple Past Tense ile anlatırız. - I went to the cinema very often when I was at university. Üniversitedeyken sinemaya çok sık giderdim / gidiyordum. DİKKAT! Yukarıdaki cümleyi Türkçe'ye iki şekilde çevirebiliriz. "Üniversitedeyken sinemaya çok sık giderdim." ya da "Üniversitedeyken sinemaya çok sık gidiyordum." Bu cümledeki "gidiyordum" ifadesi ilk anda Past Continuous Tense gibi görünse de, geçmişte belli bir noktada devam etmekte olan bir eylemi değil de, genelde olan bir eylemi anlattığı için Simple Past Tense kullanmamız gerekir. Bu durumla ilgili olarak aşağıdaki iki örneği inceleyiniz. İki cümleyi de Türkçe'ye çevirirken aynı zaman eki kullanıldığı halde, ifade ettikleri anlamlar birbirinden farklıdır. - When he was young, he played football in the school team. Dün onu gördüğümde, futbol oynuyordu. ► Simple Past or Past Continuous Fark 5 Ancak eğer geçmişte sıklıkla yaptığımız eylemleri yalnızca sınırlı bir süre devam ettiğini vurgulamak istiyorsak, bu cümelerde past continuous tense kullanabiliriz. - When Jack was in hospital, we were visiting him twice a day. Jack hastanedeyken, iki günde bir onu ziyaret ediyorduk. - To get fit for the race, I was going to the sports centre every day. Forma girmek için, hergün spor merkezine gidiyordum. ► Simple Past or Past Continuous Fark 6 Eğer geçmişte uzun sürmüş bir durumdan veya eylemden bahsediyorsak, simple past tense kullanırız. Ancak eğer yaşanan bu durum veya eylem geçiciyse, bunu vurgulamak için past continuous tense kullanabiliriz. - He worked hard all hislife. Tüm hayatı boyunca çok sıkı çalıştı Bu cümlede kesinlikle past continuous tense kullanılamaz. Çünkü geçici bir durum değildir. - I was working in a car factory during the summer of 1976. 1976 yılının yazında bir araba fabrikasında çalışıyordum. Bu cümlede her iki zaman da kullanılabilir, çünkü geçici bir süreçten bahsedilmektedir. ► Simple Past or Past Continuous Fark 7 Eğer geçmişte sıkça yapılan ve tekrarlanan eylemler, başka bir eylemin olmasına sebep olmuşsa, past continuous tense kullanılabilir. • During the time I started to get chest pains, I was playing tennis a lot. Göğüs ağrılarım başladığında, çok tenis oynuyordum. SIMPLE PAST OR PAST CONTINOUOUS I started my homework at 10 AM yesterday morning and I finished at 11 am. I was doing my homework at 1030 yesterday morning. It started raining at yesterday morning. We went out at 8 AM. It was raining when we went out yesterday morning. SIMPLE PAST TENSE PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE Complete action In the middle of an action What did you do last night? What were you doing at 10 PM last night. I watched a movie yesterday. I was watching a movie when you called last night. I didn't snow last winter. I wasn't snowing when I had the car accident. USE OF SIMPLE PAST AND PAST CONTINOUS TENSE ► Simple past tense is used to express actions one after another. Mary came home, had a shower and went to bed. ► Past continuous tense is used to express actions happening at the same time. My sister was playing in the garden while we were watching TV in the living room ► When we want to express that a new action happened in the middle of another action, we need both tenses. And we use SIMPLE PAST for the new action and PAST CONTINUOUS for the action already in progress. My mobile rang while I was watching TV. We were running in the forest - action in progress we saw a rabbit - new action ► We use Simple Past tense just to mention an action happened in the past. Yardımcı fiiller şu özneler ile kullanılırlar Am – I; is – he, she, it; are – you, we, you, they … Main verb asıl fiil birinci halde present formdir ve sonuna – ing eki anında yapılmayan eylemler de anlatılır.
